Regular price $ 99.99

This 'Tree Trunk Art - There's a Hole in my Tree Trunk Canvas Prints' shows an impressionistic tree trunk that is riddled with beetle holes.

Enjoy the architectural symetry of nature, and how even something that is clearly bad news for the maple tree, can produce a visual spectacle that the eye can feast upon.

People may not appreciate quite how successful beetles are in the grand scheme of nature. There are around 400,000 species of beetle, and collectively they are said to constitute almost 40% of all currently described insect species (with probably far more then that which remain undescribed).

On a side note... Many of us have the idea that we are all very 'advanced', and that everything that was supposed to be discovered from a natural history perspective was done so over a hundred years or more ago. But, in reality, did you know that even now, as-of 2020, between 15,000 and 18,000 new species of animals and plant life are identified each year, with around a half of those being insects?

Now, some of this is down to re-categorization of existing species, and it is also not uncommon to find new species in existing museum collections (as clearly botanists are pouring over their collections). But some of the places where new species are found are quite surprising.

For example, in 2014  a new species of frog was identified, in, of all places, New York City.

In 2018, the Natural History Museum in London reported that they had identified 270 new species, just in that year alone. With their report also saying that they had 'found an abundance of beetle species', with seven new ones identified by just that one Museum!

Now, different beetles specialize in eating different types of vegetative matter.

The 'villain' that was responsible for the holes in this tree trunk was the Asian long-horned beetle. which are also known as the sky beetle, or starry sky beetle (cool name!) This was originally native to Korea and East China, but was accidentally introduced into the United States in the 1990s, and is now something of an environmental menace.

These are big boys! They can grow up to 1.5 inches in length, have black and white markings on their bodies, and are also capable of short flying bursts (they are like the Darth Vader's of the Beetle world!)

Over 40,000 trees in the United States have been destroyed in Chicago (1,500), New York (18,000) and New Jersey (23,000) to try to eradicate the beetle, but infested trees continue to be discovered.

Anyway, the result, while shocking for the trees, is visually interesting, and does serve as a warning not to take nature for granted.

See how the bark is peeling away, and the different colors of the tree trunk.

This nature canvas would look beautiful on your walls, and make you appreciate even more all the vibrant, healthy trees that are all around you on a daily basis!
